Free Underline Tool, Works Everywhere, No Sign-Up

Underline Text Generator

Underline any word or phrase with Unicode combining characters and paste it into posts, bios and comments on platforms that have no underline button at all.

Quick answer: Social platforms removed underline from their composers because it looks like a link. This tool sideloads it: a combining low-line character after each letter renders as an underline (l̲i̲k̲e̲ t̲h̲i̲s̲) in any app that displays text.

How to Use the Underline Text Generator

Underlines pull the eye to a phrase without changing the letterforms, useful when bold feels too heavy. The generator adds the underline as Unicode, so it survives pasting anywhere.

1

Type your text

Enter or paste the words you want to convert into the box above.

2

Watch it convert

Your text instantly appears in underlined Unicode text. No button to press, no sign-up.

3

Copy the result

Click Copy next to the version you like best.

Paste it anywhere

Paste into LinkedIn, X, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Discord, anywhere that accepts text.

Underlining on Platforms That Do Not Allow It

On the web, underline traditionally means "this is a link", which is why LinkedIn, X and Facebook never shipped an underline button. Used deliberately, though, an underline is a strong highlighter: it marks the takeaway sentence of a post the way a highlighter marks a printed page.

The generator uses U+0332, a combining low line. Like all combining marks its exact position depends on the reader’s font, on most devices it forms a continuous line. Keep underlined runs short and never underline actual links, that reads as broken.

Want all 19 fonts side by side instead? Try the LinkedIn Font Generator, or use the LinkedIn Text Formatter for a full editor with a live post preview.

Skip the Copy-Paste on Social Media

The free Post Formatter Chrome extension puts underline and 30+ other styles right inside the LinkedIn, X, Facebook, Threads and Bluesky composers, select text, click a button, done. Plus drafts, a live post preview, and a character counter.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I underline text on LinkedIn or Instagram?
Type your text above, copy the underlined result, and paste it into your post, bio or comment. There is no native underline on either platform, the Unicode version is the only one that works.
Will underlined text look like a link?
To some readers, yes, that association is strong. Best practice is to underline short key phrases in the middle of a paragraph where nobody expects a link, and to never underline anything clickable-looking like a domain name.
How does the underline text generator generator work?
It does not use fonts or images. Every ordinary letter is swapped for a Unicode character that already looks underline text. Because the output is real text, it survives copy-paste into any app and renders the same for everyone.
Are there downsides to styled Unicode text?
Use it for accents, not whole posts. Styled characters are not indexed by platform search, and some screen readers spell them out awkwardly. A bold phrase or a styled headline works great, full styled paragraphs hurt readability.
Is this tool free?
Yes, completely free, no sign-up and no limits. The Post Formatter Chrome extension, which applies the same styles directly inside LinkedIn, X and Facebook, is also free.
