Graphemes used of Bluesky's 300 per post: 0 / 300

Short version · Updated October 2026

Bluesky has no native bold or italic. Its rich text only covers mentions, links and hashtags, and markdown like **bold** posts as typed. To bold text on Bluesky, paste Unicode characters such as 𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗱 or 𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘤, which the formatter above makes.

Each styled letter counts as 1 of the 300 graphemes a post allows, the same as a plain letter. Styles also work in your display name (64 graphemes) and bio (256), but not in your handle.

What you can format on Bluesky, and the limits

Every limit below comes from the AT Protocol lexicons, the schema Bluesky's servers check posts and profiles against. Each text field has two caps: graphemes (the characters a reader sees) and UTF-8 bytes.

How Bluesky counts bold and italic characters

Bluesky's composer counts graphemes, not code points or bytes. That's good news for styled text: a bold letter is one grapheme, and so is a struck-through letter even though it's two code points. Unlike X, where a styled letter counts as 2 of 280, on Bluesky it's 1 of 300. Measured from this tool's output:

StyleExampleCode points per letterGraphemes per letterUTF-8 bytes per letter
PlainBluesky111
Bold𝗕𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗸𝘆114
Italic𝘉𝘭𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘬𝘺114
Bold italic𝘽𝙡𝙪𝙚𝙨𝙠𝙮114
StrikethroughB̶l̶u̶e̶s̶k̶y̶213
UnderlineB͟l͟u͟e͟s͟k͟y̲213
Small capsʙʟᴜᴇꜱᴋʏ113
Monospace𝙱𝚕𝚞𝚎𝚜𝚔𝚢114

300 graphemes of the heaviest style here take 1,200 bytes, well under the 3,000-byte cap, so with styled text the grapheme limit is always the one you reach. Emoji are where bytes matter: the family emoji 👨‍👩‍👧 is one grapheme but 18 bytes.

Why markdown and asterisks don’t work on Bluesky

A Bluesky post is stored as plain text plus a list of facets: byte ranges that say "this part is a mention", "this part is a link" or "this part is a hashtag". Those three are the only facet types the protocol defines. There's no facet for bold, italic or headings, so the official app has nothing to render them with, and **bold** or _italic_ stay as typed.

Unicode styling doesn't need the app's help, because the letters are different characters. That's also why it carries over when you cross-post the same text to Threads or X.

How to Bold Text on Bluesky

There's nothing to switch on in Bluesky: the styling is in the characters themselves. Write the post here, style the words that matter and paste the result into the composer.

1

Type or paste

Write the post, reply or bio in the editor above.

2

Select text

Highlight the words to style, or leave nothing selected to style it all.

3

Pick a style

Bold, Italic, Strikethrough, Underline or a font from the menu.

Copy & paste

Click Copy and paste into bsky.app or the Bluesky app.

The counter under the editor shows graphemes out of 300, the unit Bluesky's own composer counts. Bold and italic come from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block (U+1D400 to U+1D7FF), strikethrough adds U+0336 after each letter. It's plain text, so other Bluesky apps show it too, as long as the device's font has the glyphs.

Why Style Text on Bluesky?

Bluesky feeds are chronological and text-heavy. With 300 graphemes per post, a bold first line is how a skeet gets read instead of skimmed.

Thread openers

Bold the first post of a thread so readers know it continues.

Readable lists

A bold label per line turns a dense post into something scannable.

Display name and bio

64 and 256 graphemes, and Unicode styles work in both.

Same text elsewhere

Cross-post to Threads or Mastodon and the styling comes along.

Search

Styled letters are different characters, so a search for the plain word may not find them.

Screen readers

Some read Unicode bold letter by letter. Style a phrase, not the whole post.

Handles and hashtags

Keep @handles, links and #tags plain so they stay mentions, links and tags.

Bluesky Formatting FAQ

Updated October 2026

Can you bold text on Bluesky?
Not with a button: Bluesky has no bold, italic or underline option in posts. What works is Unicode text, letters from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block that look bold or italic. Style your text in the formatter above, copy it and paste it into the Bluesky composer.
Does Bluesky support markdown?
No. Typing **bold** or *italic* in the Bluesky app posts the asterisks as they are. A Bluesky post is plain text plus facets, byte ranges that mark mentions, links and hashtags, and the protocol defines no facet for bold or italic.
Do bold letters count more toward the 300 limit?
No. Bluesky counts graphemes, the characters a reader sees, so a bold letter counts as 1, the same as a plain one. Strikethrough letters are two code points each but still one grapheme. The second limit, 3,000 bytes, only matters for heavy emoji; 300 styled letters take at most 1,200 bytes.
Can I use bold or fancy fonts in my Bluesky display name and bio?
Yes. The display name allows 64 graphemes and the bio 256, and Unicode styles work in both. Your handle is different: it is a domain name like alex.bsky.social, which only takes plain letters, digits and hyphens, so it can’t be styled.
Will styled text show in other Bluesky apps?
Yes. The styling is stored in the post as ordinary Unicode text, so any app that reads Bluesky posts shows it, on the web, iOS and Android. The only exception is a device whose font lacks the glyphs, which then shows empty boxes.
Should I style hashtags and mentions?
No. A styled hashtag is made of different characters, so it no longer matches the plain tag people follow, and a styled @handle doesn’t resolve to an account. Style the words around them instead.
Is this Bluesky text formatter free?
Yes. No account, no limit, and the text never leaves your browser. In the Post Formatter Chrome extension, bold, italic, strikethrough and underline are free on all seven platforms; Pro adds the 20+ premium styles, post previews, Smart Paste and the AI features.
